The Current

June 2023 #1

We’re starting the summer season with something brand new and something with a measure of history. The first and last below are works by student artists appearing this weekend at the Rittenhouse art fair. In between you’ll see a sample from Evan Slapian’s collection at Works on Paper and a bit of sizzle from Pushing at Paradigm.

Ella Solimene a student at Tyler School of Art, had this drawing, hanging casually at the edge of a booth in the Rittenhouse art fair. Layered images, knit together into a single reality by a compelling composition and startlingly adept use of contrast. This is a pretty damn interesting piece of work. (Editor’s note…many thanks to Olivia Hiester that corrected the original attribution for this work!)
This Robert Cottingham at Works on Paper…is a drawing tour-de-force. High craft, extremely tight composition that fills the pictorial space with crisp form…all in the service of capturing a moment of urban silence. If you lived in NYC in the ’80’s you’ll recognize the moment. This and other treasures can be found at Works on Paper.
Miriam Singer at Paradigm’s ‘Pushing’. Pushing is a lively show with lots to look at. Here’s a small sample with a different kind of whimsical urban bounce. A little bit of joy in a very enjoyable show spread across several floors.

Holly Dudley a student at PAFA with a booth at this weekend’s Rittenhouse art fair, brings us this is a work with multiple layers of meaning. There’s a real feel for the mood of color, and how color empowers content, space and light. One door is open and another closed, like how life works, like how we breathe in and out. The place feels a a bit exotic with a soft kind of mystery. There’s a lot to think about in this deft piece of creation.
