The Current

May 2023 #2

Hope you enjoy this second post for May 2023. All links are live and bring you to the artist’s and gallery’s websites.

Corridor Contemporary, on Frankford Avenue in Fishtown presents an interesting mix, ranging from slick (and frankly stunning) Salle ‘giclees’ to original works from regional and local artists. This Jason Andrew Turner reminds us of his work for Mural Arts, and illustrates his ability to elicit nuanced psychological insight with a simplified graphic toolkit.
Mecro‘, in contrast, takes a ‘more the merrier’ approach piling layers of imagery in a rich visual parfait with hints of darkness and sly humor. An ample display of ample imagery can be seen at James Oliver. Be bold and climb the vertiginous staircase all the way to the top, but don’t miss Hot Bed gallery on the way up.
The mythic, symbolic and graphic come together in this lovely Joe Boruchow print. Click his link and arrive at a print and t-shirt shopper’s delight! We found two of these beauties hanging in the hallway at 319 North 11th, although the internet tells me that Boruchow is associated with Paradigm. 319 North 11th, by the way, is the real deal…a gritty studio and gallery building…hard to get to, and then you wonder if the elevator has been inspected. It’s the kind of environment where the creative process gets visceral.
Here we’re back touring the upstairs galleries at Corridor Contemporary. This is an original oil on linen with high technique by Michael Steinbrick. If you link to his website you can see however, that beyond the dazzle there’s an exceptional colorist at work. It’s easy to be taken in when there’s real beauty.
